Exterior Painting Procedures

Preparation for finishing a surface is just as important as the application process. Portsmouth Painting Company offers the most advanced process to ensure a high- quality product and the satisfaction of our customer.

• We pressure wash all substrates (which we outline in each customized painting proposal to remove discoloration caused by mildew, dirt, tannin bleed, or chalking.
• We thoroughly scrape surface areas intending to be resealed to transfer loose, peeling, cracking, or blistering paint.
• We sand rough surfaces for ideal adhesion and maximum paint penetration.
• We spot prime uncovered substrates using an alkyd-based primer to seal any bare surfaces. Rust-inhibiting primer will be applied to metal surfaces which exhibit stain-causing tendencies. A shellac-based primer will be used to seal out knots and tannin bleed.
• Caulking the gaps and seams: Over time, expanding and contracting occurs on the surface of the structure. It is essential to the integrity of the professional coating to fill any openings with the product that will move (breathe) with the structure to guarantee an efficient seal and prevent moisture damage.
• We mask and remove items against all of the painting surfaces.

The application will be performed by professional painters, in ideal conditions to provide a uniform finish. Finish coatings will be applied by hand brush, roller, airless sprayer, or HVLP sprayer (high volume low pressure). Any surfaces covered by airless sprayer will be back brushed for optimal coverage.

The Portsmouth Historical Society hired Portsmouth Painting Company to give the John Paul Jones House on Middle Street a well-deserved fresh coat of paint, and they did an amazing job! The crew gave the 1758 house a thorough prep job before restoring the exterior to its full yellow glory, and it has received many compliments since. Additionally, Dave was great to work with and help to make sure the historic house properly protected and each detail was meticulously finished. We are so pleased with their work and look forward to many more years of it looking its best!

Dave Pine and his team at Portsmouth Painting company are professional and courteous. The Music Hall takes an enormous amount of pride in our 140-year old historic building and Dave was the perfect partner to work with on such an important project. The Music Hall had not had a facelift in 30+ years and he helped choose a color that would respect the history of the building, and make a statement for the next 30+ years. He and his team were such great communicators through any changes or challenges that came up on the project; they were always willing to adapt to our needs. We were working with multiple vendors while Dave and his team were on site. They did a great job working with crews from multiple disciplines that needed to work in close proximity to the painting work. The Music Hall was still open during construction and the team at Portsmouth Painting Co. treated our patrons with the utmost respect and kept the space safe at all times. The final product is outstanding and helped complete the vision we had for our exterior renovations. We really appreciate all the hard work and dedication and would definitely work with them again.
